Many people have gallstones and don’t know about them. But a few people get recurrent discomfort when they eat a fatty meal or even attacks of severe pain, sometimes needing hospitalisation for antibiotics.

Retrosternal (behind the breastbone), burning discomfort, rising up from the abdomen and heading towards your throat is the most common complaint. We call this heartburn. When it cause damage we call this GORD or GERD.
The majority of patients with GORD are treated with medications like PPIs but some patients do not want to take PPIs for life and can’t skip a dose or get their symptoms back; or have side-effects or your symptoms persist despite the tablets. If this is the case then anti-reflux surgery may be indicated. It treats the cause (i.e. repairs your hiatus hernia so that you don’t reflux at all) rather than PPIs which treat the effect (i.e. you still reflux but with reduced acid in the fluid so you get less symptoms). There are a number of options for this surgery nowadays.
