Jon specialises in upper gastrointestinal surgery and advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, with surgical interests in weight loss (bariatric), oesophageal and gastric cancer, acid-reflux disorders, anti-reflux surgery, along with surgery for hernias and gallstones.
Jon is a specialist Upper GI, General and Bariatric surgeon at Jersey General Hospital. He has an interest in all areas of upper GI surgery: advanced laparoscopy, bariatric surgery, anti-reflux surgery, upper GI oncology and complicated biliary disease. He was appointed to Jersey to set up the weight loss surgery programme but has taken over the complex biliary surgery portfolio being a gallbladder specialist and has also set up an anti-reflux surgery service considering he has just come from the largest reflux centre in the World!
He performs a wide range of general surgery, including
and minor surgeries such as
Despite the unusual surname, Jon is a posh Geordie from the North East of England, and graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1993. Jon spent three years in full time research studying patients with oesophageal cancer, leading to a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD). He spent a year in Melbourne, Australia as a registrar in surgery and another year in Brisbane, as a fellow in advanced laparoscopic and upper gastrointestinal surgery.
He was appointed as a consultant surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, UK, in 2008. But the Aussie bug never left him and in 2013 he was headhunted to a job in Adelaide suited to his skills…and personality! He had been working at The Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre prior to returning to the UK due to the difficulties of seeing his family in COVID-19 times.
He has an international reputation for research in upper gastrointestinal surgery and holds honorary positions as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide, Flinders University & Edinburgh University. He speaks internationally on upper gastrointestinal surgery and helped to set up the Oesophageal Cancer Awareness campaign in the UK. With his extensive OG cancer background, Jon is noticeably compassionate and cares deeply for his patients.
Patients tend to take an instant liking to Jon although his jokes are uniformly terrible.
He is living in St Brelade with his wife and three young children who have adapted rapidly to Jersey from Adelaide and enjoy running through deep grass screaming ‘no snakes’! He is a keen film photographer and is loving the light.
